The Best of Brisbane this Summer

Want to have an incredible Summer? Head to Brisbane. From November to January, it’s a summer oasis of pool bars, entertainment and outdoor eateries. Here’s our top picks to add to your summertime to-do list.

Blockbuster Events

The coming Summer season in Brisbane will see a host of stellar events from sporting finals to theatre to family fun. Wonderland at The Powerhouse is back for a debaucherous end-of-year carnival of circus, comedy, music, magic and burlesque from 23 November to 3 December. In true sunshine state style, the shows linger well into the summer evenings and are usually followed by drinks at a swanky rooftop bar (read on for said swanky bars).

The Ashes returns to Australia this year, giving us the home ground advantage in winning back the coveted title from the Poms. The First Test will be held at the Gabba 23 to 27 November and we are hoping the Aussie heat will startle the English and secure us a win. Tickets are already on sale here, book these ones early, it’s known to sell out well before November.

For those yearning for a European Christmas, take yourself to see Tchaikovsky’s magnificent music in the Queensland Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker. The magical storytelling along with the lavish set and costumes is a treat for all and as an added bonus, will provide you with temporary relief from the Brisbane heat if you’ve had a little too much fun in the sun…

Brunch

We know how much you lot enjoy your brunch which makes us very excited to announce that Brissy offers some of the best brunch venues for maximum sunshine and mid-morning munching.

Sweet or savory? Either way, The Gunshop Cafe will treat your taste buds. Those with a sweet tooth will salivate over their peanut butter and jelly waffles topped with toasted marshmallow. Those craving a salty something will love the house cured ocean trout with pickled beets, lotus root, rainbow radish and charred bread. The tropical greenery in their outdoor terrace is also super inviting and a great backdrop for your insta pic.

Slept through your alarm? No stress, The Priory has you covered serving brunch until 2.30pm in their bright and airy space. Avocado lovers will enjoy their OTT smashed avo toast with grilled haloumi, pomegranate, tahini, spiced chickpeas, cherry tomatoes and dukkha. Kids in tow? Try their dippy egg with buttered rye soldiers.

For those craving great coffee, check out Double Shot in New Farm. This popular spot serves a smooth blend of Merlo coffee and also has three full cabinets of house made pastries and sweet treats.

Bars

With an average of 264 sunny days a year (verses 185 days for poor old Melbourne), Brisbanites make the most of this incredible weather by being outdoors, with a cold brew (see cider/cocktail) in hand. No stranger to a rooftop bar or beer garden, it’s hard to narrow down our top list of Brisbane bars but to name just two…

For West Hollywood white and gold glam, head to Soleil Pool Bar in South Bank where you’ll find an extensive line up of refreshing cocktails and a bar menu featuring burgers and pizza and sugared doughnuts, a very welcome combination.

A little quirkier and quaint, Fitz + Potts is a laid back rooftop terrace in the trendy suburb of Nundah. Home to cold press juice cocktails, an assortment of martinis and Brisbane’s best craft beers.

If you’ve had your hit of Vit D, head underground, some of Brisbane’s best bars are hidden behind secret doorways and cellars. Check out everything you need to know here.
