Clean, white sand and the bright blue of the Indian Ocean act as the centrepiece in Scarborough, enticing locals and out-of-towners alike. But it’s not just the beach that makes this suburb an excellent place to visit: the drinking and dining options are some of Perth’s best, the vibe is gloriously relaxed and there’s plenty of fun to be found once the sun goes down.
When you wake up with a hungry tummy – and some serious coffee cravings – local favourites BOHO Espresso and Kinky Swell have you covered. Both serve up excellent breakfasts, with menu items that cater to everyone from savoury fans to sugar fiends and grease-seekers to health conscious eaters. Later on in the day, try The Hardware Store for their delicious pulled beef sandwiches or Pizzaca for crisped to perfection woodfired pizzas. New addition Seaburbia is also worth a stop for a freshly-squeezed juice with a view and a post-drink wander around the café’s art gallery.
If you’re looking for a place to stay, look no further than the Rendezvous Hotel Scarborough. It sits right next to the beach, boasts beautiful ocean views, regular rooftop yoga and an excellent onsite restaurant, Straits Cafe. You also can't go past their poolside bar, mojito anyone? These attributes also make it the perfect event venue and the hotel has hosted some seriously spectacular outdoor sunset weddings. Their restaurant Straits Cafe
Sunset is the perfect time to sip your first cocktail when you’re in town. With the big golden orb sinking directly over the ocean, the views, the light and the atmosphere are utterly delightful. Scarborough Beach Bar is the pick of the bunch, with its chilled vibes, extensive drinks menu and uninterrupted ocean views. Matisse Beach Club is also a good choice and feels like a tropical party paradise, complete with swimming pool, cabanas and fruity cocktails. For a laid-back glass of wine, head to all-day trader The Wild Fig. It’s quirky, charming and if you feel like staying on, does a truly excellent dinner.
With coastline this beautiful, it’s no surprise the locals have made the most of beach activities. You can learn to surf, spend the day fishing, get your heart racing with kite or windsurfing, or go for a leisurely sunset sail. You can also stretch your legs with a nice long walk along the sand, heading north to Trigg Beach or south to Brighton Beach. The sun shines down on Scarborough most days of the year so, even when it’s a little too cold to swim, you can still enjoy the great outdoors. Try the aforementioned rooftop yoga at Rendezvous, or for something completely different, sign yourself up for a session at Twilight Flyers where you can learn the ropes of trapeze.
