The Ashes returns to Australia this year, giving us the home ground advantage in winning back the coveted title from the Poms. With both teams having 32 series wins under their belts and a lot of fresh faces in their line-ups, competition will be fierce and crowds will be rowdy. In other words, it’s the perfect time to get involved.
The series will make its way around the country, hopping from Brisbane to Adelaide (where the tournament will get its first ever day/night match), Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. While all matches will be worth tuning into – just ask any member of the Fanatics – Melbourne’s match is set to be an absolute corker thanks to the MCG’s huge capacity and the fact the first ball will be thrown on Boxing Day. Think of it as the perfect extension to Christmas.
Tickets are going as cheaply as $10 (but you’ll have to be quick to snap them up!), BYO picnics are encouraged and there’s even a dedicated alcohol-free family zone for those looking to escape the rabble. Of course, those looking for a beer or two will find plenty of handy bars at the stadium along with traditional big match fare of pies, chips and hot dogs.
While you can drive to the event (and make use of $10 parking in Yarra Park), we strongly suggest catching public transport or using your own two feet. If you stay at Adina Melbourne on Flinders Street you can do just that, spending 8 minutes on the Route 70 tram or 15 minutes strolling from door to door.
Sweetening the deal is the fact that you’ll also be close to Melbourne’s best laneways, bars and restaurants, making post-play dinner and drinks incredibly easy. There’s also a stack of great cafes near the hotel for breakfast but, with your own fully-equipped kitchen, you’ll have the option of preparing the first meal of the day yourself should the mood take you.
The final drawcard of a stay at Adina Flinders Street is how great the apartments are for groups. Staying as two couples? Great, book the one of the two bedroom apartments and enjoy the comfy king beds. Staying with mates? Then you’ll be pleased to know the bedrooms can be configured to house two single beds.
So, what are you waiting for? Secure a seat to one of Australia’s biggest sporting traditions and a room at a hotel that will allow you to make the most of it.
