4 Ways to Spend Summer in the Sunshine Capital

Fancy relaxing at a rooftop bar with Rafael Nadal? The opportunities are endless in Brisbane this Summer! Here are our options of the best ways to spend the long, hot, Summer days up North.

Cool down and enjoy a Summer sunset at a rooftop bar

The sunshine state is the obvious location for the country’s best rooftop bars, with picturesque sunsets that last well into the evening and an abundance of trendy spots to soak up some Vitamin D. Eleven Rooftop Bar is a favourite among locals for its impressive 270 degree views of the CBD and greater Brisbane as well as its sophisticated cocktail list featuring the Rhubarb Limonata, the Monte Carlo and the Camilla Colada – oh la la! Elixir Rooftop Bar is the place to be on a Sunday afternoon where you can wash down $5 boutique beers and ciders as you appreciate the stunning view and ambient atmosphere of the converted rooftop space. A quaint oasis with funky décor and the perfect escape from the bustling city below. Also worth noting is Up on Constance and Eagles Nest!

Immerse yourself in Australian sport

The Rugby League World Cup, International Test Match Cricket and Brisbane International Tennis with Rafael Nadal will all be hosted in Brisbane over December and January. Watch as Australia battles it out on the court and the field, up against a lineup of the best international athletes. If spectating isn’t your thing, try out free Zumba, aqua aerobics and yoga classes with Medibank’s Feel Good program hosted in South Bank Parklands during November and December.

Out of the box activities

Spice up your summer holidays and try something you wouldn’t normally do – new year, new you right? Take a day drip to Moreton Island, a 20-minute drive and short ferry trip from Brisbane city where you can experience the golden beaches and natural attractions like the giant sand dunes you can toboggan down. Picture yourself in a transparent Perspex kayak, with thousands of fish exploring the vibrant coral beneath you. For something truly spectacular, Australian Sunset Safaris offers a nighttime kayaking experience off the shores of Moreton Island. Your kayak is lit with LED lights which also attract the fish to your vessel as you paddle around after dark. If you’d prefer to stay on dry land, lace up your hiking boots and take on Mount Coot-tha, the highest peak in Brisbane giving you the best vantage point of the city. A round trip of the hike takes around 3 hours but you can easily drive half way up the hill and still enjoy a cool drink at Kuta Cafe at the top of the summit without breaking a sweat.

Sit back and be entertained

Holidays are for indulging, so sit back and indulge yourself in the spread of entertainment Brisbane has to offer. Watch Roald Dahl’s quirky tale come to life in Matilda the Musical. Marvel at the talent of the child actors and the touching storyline as you enter into the mind of an ordinary girl with an incredible imagination. Come one, come all to the most incredible circus in town – Cirque du Soleil presents KOOZA, a cheeky and captivating spectacle by the world’s best acrobat, gymnasts and musicians. KOOZA explores the fundamentals of clowning through the thrilling acrobatic performances Cirque du Soleil is famous for. Celebrate Australia day at St Jerome’s Laneway Festival and indulge in the best of local and international talent. Local favourites Tame Impala and Chet Faker are headlining this year’s event – you’ll be hard pressed to find better company than that to spend your Australia Day with.
