Top 10 Sydney Eastern Suburbs Eats

There’s lots to love about Sydney’s eastern suburbs. The beaches (naturally), the bars, the shopping and of course the food. We’re of the mindset that happy bellies make happy people so have taken it upon ourselves to create a definitive list of top 10 eats in the east. Make your way through it at will.

  1. Jo & Willy’s Depot, North Bondi

All good days start with a good breakfast and this is our favourite option in the east. If you’re on the move, or the line of loyal locals is too long, grab a coffee and a still-warm-from-the-oven baked good from the front counter. If you have the time to sit, order the delicious green eggs and ham or the fluffy gluten-free pancakes and enjoy the view.

  1. The Apollo, Potts Point

This glorious Greek venue was named the seventh best restaurant in the world last year, something which came as no surprise to its regular clientele. The fried saganaki cheese with honey and oregano is utter heaven and the oven baked lamb shoulder is melt-in-your-mouth amazing. The ouzo selection is also excellent and, really, it would be rude not to finish your meal with a glass and the customary ‘opa!’.

  1. Little Shenkin, Randwick

Erskineville’s Shenkin sprouted a little sister last year, bringing all its trademark Middle Eastern goodness to the east. Everything here is delicious, from the Israeli breakfast to the hummus plates and twice-cooked eggplant. It’s small, so you might struggle to secure a seat, but they also do take-away.

  1. Gelato Messina, Bondi

We couldn’t leave Australia’s favourite gelato off the list. With 40 incredible flavours all made from scratch (even down to the freshly baked apple pies they crumble with loving, tender care into the apple gelato), as many free tastes as you want, and some very generous serving sizes there really is no better place to be when you’re craving something sweet.

  1. Vacanza, Bronte

The deli counter alone would be enough to make this place list-worthy, filled with oozy burrata and perfectly-pink prosciutto, but it’s the traditional Italian pizzas which are the stars of the show. As an added bonus you can also BYO.

  1. Farmhouse, Kings Cross

A tiny restaurant with a winning idea and delicious, delicious food. If you’ve never been, please allow us to explain: it’s a one room, one table set-up which serves a constantly changing five course menu. It only sits 20 so if you have a big celebration coming up you can book out the whole place and stay until the wee hours.

  1. Three Blue Ducks, Bronte

The famous café/restaurant hybrid has been plating up exceptional meals for years. Whether you chow down on the trademark black sausage for brekky or the succulent pressed lamb shoulder for dinner, you’ll be leaving very satisfied indeed.

  1. Bar Machiavelli, Rushcutters Bay

Craving silky handmade pasta? How does pappardelle with slow cooked duck ragout sound? What about baby gnocchi with blue cheese and caramelised walnuts? Add in some fine Italian wine, friendly hosts and intriguingly modern interiors and you have the perfect package.

  1. North Bondi Fish, North Bondi

Everything just works at this beachside venue, from the exquisite ocean views to the breezy interiors and fresh, expertly prepared seafood. If you’re wondering where to have your next long lunch, look no further.

  1. Sugarcane, Coogee

This top-notch Asian offering moved east from Surry Hills last year and we couldn’t be happier. The salt and pepper lamb ribs and the braised eggplant should be non-negotiable parts of any order and the Sloe Rose Negroni always goes down a treat.
