Top 5 Sweet Treats in Canberra

Looking to satisfy sugar cravings in the nations’ capital? Here are our five top picks.

  1. The caramel popcorn sundae at eightysix

It’s not every day a dessert gets its own cover but this sundae is so beautiful it graced Australian Gourmet Traveller back in 2013. The good news is it tastes every bit as good as it looks, all toasty caramel, buttery ice-cream and crunchy bits.

  1. Any of the doughnuts at Bombolini

A Canberra institution, this little market stall creates eight different flavours of doughy goodness every weekend. You’ll need to get in early to secure your pick but trust us, these little sugar hits are worth waking up for.

We love this photo from @haggisandchips. Who came in the early hours to capture some shots of our bombolinis. 😍👌🍩

  1. Scoops of gelato at Frugii

Churning out everything from traditional vanilla bean to the more adventurous roasted garlic, Frugii is the place to be when you’re craving treats of the frozen kind. They also cater to all dietary requirements, offering flavours which are gluten free and vegan friendly.

for someone who's lactose intolerant, I eat an awful lot of ice cream 🍦🙊

  1. Authentic Italian pastries at the Italian Continental Bakery and Cafe

Cannoli, crostoli, sfogliatella and zuppette: one look at the front cabinet of this family-run pastry shop and you’ll swear you’ve somehow made it to Italy.

  1. One of everything from the counter at Ricardo’s Café and Patisserie

We’d like to be more specific in our suggestion but we simply can’t decide between the Big Boy Ferrero Rochers (which consist mainly of Nutella mousse), the Sticky Date Bombs or the Wagon Wheels in all their peanut butter and raspberry glory. Take a friend and try all three.
