What’s On in Canberra this Winter

Canberra is one of those cities that embraces the cooler months wonderfully, celebrating chilly temperatures with food, wine and a good dose of culture.

Canberra’s Truffle Festival kicks winter off with a bang, celebrating the world’s most coveted fungi in every way possible. You can take part in truffle hunts, enjoy truffle-infused dishes, learn how to cook with the distinctive ingredient and let the earthy smell take over your senses at one of the many farmers’ markets. The festival runs from the winter solstice on June 21 to the end of August, giving you ample opportunity to join in the festivities.

If it’s your creative side you want to feed, the Canberra Writers Festival has you covered. While it’s only in its second year, the event has secured some very big names who are coming together to discuss the themes of Power, Politics and Passion. The program is designed to attract avid readers and aspiring writers alike and will be popping up at multiple venues around the city during the last weekend in August.

In The City is set to host the World Curry Festival again this year, warming tastebuds and bellies with everything from massaman to tikka masala and kuku paku. As well as the food there’ll be a series of cultural displays and the fiercely contested chilli eating competition where locals and visitors alike battle it out to win the title of Canberra’s hottest citizen.

The Winter Festival is setting up stumps in the nation’s capital again this year, bringing its collection of chill-busting activities to the city from June 23 – July 17. You can warm yourself up with a session on the ice-skating rink, test out your snow skills on the Toboggan of Terror and enjoy a hot chocolate or mulled wine at the traditional European market. You can also kick back to live music, be impressed by professional ice-skating performances and fall head over heels in love with one of the world’s gentlest furry giants - the Saint Bernards.

It's a chilly day in Perth! Great weather for a skate on our 600sqm ice rink at Winter Festival Fremantle! ❄️🐧💙

If you fancy a glass of red in front of a crackling fire, the annual Fireside Festival has you covered. A brainchild of The Poachers’ Way collective, Fireside sees events pop up in various venues around the city throughout the month of August. You might choose to enjoy one of the region’s best degustations, learn about the ways of wine at a local vineyard – sampling as you go, or try your hand at mustering sheep on horseback. If there’s one way to fall in love with the cooler season, this is it, so book as many events as you dare and let the city, its people and produce work their magic.
